Fungal nails and nail thickening
1. Fungal infection is the leading cause of thick nail
Our last post talked about thick nails being a sign of other conditions. However, thickened fungal nails are quite common amongst elderlies. Thick nail is the inevitable sign of fungal infection.
2. How does a fungal infection lead to thickening of the nail?
When fungus invades into the nail plate or the nail bed, it will quickly multiply itself and make the nail thick. The accumulation of Cornified substances further add thickness to the nail. This causes the nail to discolor. Generally, the nail can be beefed up by two to three times thicker
3. Fungal infection can cause serious problem to the nail
If the problem is left untreated, lifting will occrwhile it continues to thicken. The nail will look cloudy And eventually come off. What makes it worse is if there is athletes foot atthe same time, cross infection can happen between them and ends up in much more complicated problem
If this is the case, go to see a specialist as soon as possible.
上次提到5種令腳趾甲變厚的原因，其實還有一個引致腳趾甲變厚的因素—-灰甲。
灰甲與腳趾甲變厚
1）灰甲是趾甲變厚的主因
事實上，上回提過腳趾甲變厚的原因只是一些疾病的附加表現。很多時候，老人家腳趾甲變厚大多數都是由灰指甲造成的。腳趾甲變厚最主要的原因是患上了灰甲，是灰甲導致腳趾甲變厚的。
2）為何患上灰甲會出現腳趾甲變厚
腳趾甲變厚是因為真菌進入到甲板或者是甲床以後快速繁殖使腳趾甲變厚，角質物的堆積會使腳趾甲變厚情況加劇。腳趾甲變厚也加深了甲床混濁程度，一般腳趾甲變厚後可以比正常甲板厚1～3倍或以上!
3）灰甲對腳趾甲的危害其實很大
在腳趾甲變厚時不予以控制，將不止出現腳趾甲變厚的情況，後期甲板翹起時腳趾甲變厚情況更嚴重、更渾濁，最終腳趾甲變厚導致甲板脫落。同時，導致腳趾甲變厚的甲真菌還會交叉感染腳癬，若甲癬和腳癬同時發作將比腳趾甲變厚難治得多，可不只是治療腳趾甲變厚那麼簡單了。

Are your toenails growing thicker? Most people do not think much of it since the toenails are hidden inside the shoes. However, if one continues to brush off the problem, what can happen? First, let us discuss the root causes.
Five major reasons of thick toenails:
1. Onychauxis / Thick Nail Syndrome
The nails have grown abnormally and the nail plates become evenly thick. This kind of disorder is usually caused by nail matrix involvement.
2. Congenital

This kind of nail thickening disorder is usually accompanied by redness on the soles, as well as thickened, rough and deepening of lines on the skin.
4. Chronic diseases
Thickening of the nails can be a sign of respiratory disease, thyroid disease and Lymphatic disease along with other symptoms.
5. Aging
Older people usually have thicker nails. The reason could be due to slow metabolism rate off the horny layer of the nails.

4）慢性疾病
腳趾甲變厚也要考慮慢性呼吸系統、甲狀腺或淋巴腺疾病，這些疾病會引起腳趾甲變厚的連鎖反應。
5）年齡問題
腳趾甲變厚的情況老人多有發生，腳趾甲變厚是由於老人隨着年齡增大，構成指甲的角質層代謝減慢，導致腳趾甲變厚。
