Don’t Rub Your Eyes! The Risky Experience of Almost Going Blind from Scratching an Itch with Gel Nails

In Hong Kong, ladies who love beauty often visit nail salons to have their nails done, making their nails sparkle and charming. However, 28-year-old Miss Yu from Kaohsiung almost paid the price of losing her eyesight due to scratching her eye with gel nails.

Here’s what happened: Miss Yu has seasonal conjunctivitis, making her eyes itch uncontrollably. After getting her nails done, she accidentally scratched her cornea with her nails while rubbing her eyes. The next day, she felt redness, swelling, and a stinging sensation in her eyes, prompting her to see a doctor immediately. The doctor found bleeding under the conjunctiva of her left eye, multiple corneal scratches in her right eye, and the chemicals from the nails further exacerbated the situation.

Ophthalmologists stated that her cornea was almost torn, and there was pus accumulation, causing her vision to drop to 0.5, almost leading to blindness. Fortunately, after treatment, her vision was restored to 1.0.

This experience scared Miss Yu greatly. So, what should you do if your eyes itch in the future? Nail technicians suggest gently pressing with the fingertip rather than scratching directly with the nails. Whether you have gel nails or not, the eyes, being the windows to the soul, are fragile, and casual rubbing can increase the risk of infection. Doctors also advise using a clean tissue to wipe gently as a safer option to avoid accidental injuries.

Everyone should be careful to protect their eyes, whether or not they have gel nails, as health is the ultimate beauty!
